Riverine communities Moraikobai, Orealla, and Siparuta over the weekend voted in two new toshaos to head their new village councils.

Returning Officer Sandie Ross on Sunday evening declared Derrick John, Regional Democratic Councillor for Region Five, as the new Toshao for Moraikobai after he secured 159 votes.

The other candidates, Sylvan Henry and Mary Joseph, secured 133 and 106 votes, respectively.

Stabroek News was told that John had served twice as Toshao for Moraikobai in the past and as Chairman of the National Toshaos Council (NTC) in 2012.

Meanwhile, a total of twenty-eight (28) candidates contested for election to the 12-member council.

Those elected are: Jeff Bonaparte, Rowena Clinton, Lucia Andries, Valicia Andries, Mona Adrian, Collin Adrian, Leslie Budburg, Raymond Clinton, Mabeka D’Oliveria, Gavin Jacobs, Shawn Smith, and Orlando Jacobs.

Meanwhile, Lewis Devair, 61, of Orealla Village was declared the Toshao of Orealla/Siparuta on Sunday evening following their village council elections.

Devair secured 147 votes, narrowly defeating David Henry who secured 143 votes. The other candidates were Joseph Aaron, of Siparuta, secured 84 votes; Rudolph Hudson, who secured 68 votes, and Joel Peneux, who secured 56 votes.
