Cops destroy over $13M in ganja at Canje River

Police on Friday morning destroyed millions of dollars’ worth of cannabis, including 1,000 plants, during a drug eradication exercise at Cow Savannah, Canje River.

The exercise was carried out during the early morning hours on the banks of the Canje River.

Among the items which were found and destroyed were 1,000 plants, 55 kilogrammes of compressed marijuana, 500 grammes of marijuana, and six 12-gauge cartridges.

They have an estimated value of $13.7 million, according to the Guyana Police Force.

According to a police report, the plants, which were about two feet in height, were found on the right bank of the Canje River.

The left bank of the river was also searched and several parcels, wrapped in plastic bags, were found with a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis, the police said.

A black bag containing six twelve gauge cartridges was also found.

“The cannabis plants were cut down and the suspected cannabis taken into custody,” the report noted.

The report further stated that while the ranks were heading up the Canje River a wooden boat with three occupants was stopped at Calabash, Canje River.

The occupants and their belongings were searched and a black plastic bag with a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis was found in the backpack of one of the occupants.

The suspected cannabis, which the occupant was allegedly found in possession of, amounted to 500 grammes.

The suspected cannabis and the cartridges were lodged and the suspect was taken in custody.
