Four COVID deaths reported, 42 new cases

The Ministry of Health yesterday announced that four new COVID-19 deaths occurred between May 29 and 30.

An 81-year-old man from Region Ten, an 83-year-old woman from Region Four and a 30-year-old man from Region Nine all died on May 29.  A 65-year-old man from Region Three died on Sunday.

As a result, the country’s death toll now stands at 389. The ministry noted that these persons were admitted to facilities with COVID-19-like symptoms and died while receiving care. Samples which were taken when they were admitted returned positive results for the novel coronavirus.

Meanwhile, a total of 42 new cases were reported yesterday thus increasing Guyana’s total confirmed cases to 16,952. These new cases were recorded after some 356 more persons were tested. According to the dashboard’s breakdown of cases regionally, the majority of new cases were reported in Regions Six and Four with 22 and 11 cases respectively.

There are now 2,018 active cases in the country, 102 of whom are in institutional isolation while another 1,916 are in home isolation. Some 23 persons are in the COVID-19 ICU.

The authorities have since extended the current COVID-19 emergency measures to the month of June. The 10:30pm to 4:00am curfew remains in effect along with  restrictions on gatherings.

Persons are still required to wear face masks in public, while traveling in a vehicle and at workplaces. Restaurants are still allowed to open however, at 40% capacity of the building while other safety measures must be in place.
