Adyemi Dumisani Hinds, who was set to travel to the United States, is now behind bars after he was charged and remanded over a quantity of cocaine that authorities say was found in his hand luggage at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).

Hinds, who is said to be a gold miner and resident of Iguana Drive, North Ruimveldt, appeared at the Diamond/Grove Magistrate’s Court last Thursday and Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman remanded him to prison on a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

It is alleged that on June 1, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, he had 1.520 kg of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking in his possession.

Hinds entered a not guilty plea and the matter was adjourned until June 29.

According to the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU), Hinds, who was headed to the United States via a JetBlue flight, was arrested on Tuesday night. CANU said that its ranks acted on suspicion and intercepted his luggage for examination at the screening point at the CJIA.

It further said that the narcotic was found in the bottom of the man’s hand luggage and it was taken to the CANU headquarters, where it was tested by use of a narcotic presumptive test which gave a positive result for cocaine. Hinds was cautioned and hence brought before a court on Thursday.
