Labourer’s finger severed in row over $160 weed debt

A labourer lost a finger on Sunday when he tried to buy ganja without settling a previous $160 debt.

Police have said the injured man, Collins Smartt, also known as “Rastaman,” 36, of Little Africa, Corentyne, Berbice, was wounded by two suspects, whom he described as “drug dealers.”

The Guyana Police Force, in a report, stated that the victim visited the home of the two accused to purchase marijuana.

However, on his arrival the male suspect asked him for $160, which he had owed on a previous transaction.

As a result an argument ensued between the man and the suspects during which the male suspect armed himself with a cutlass and dealt Smartt a chop on his right hand, severing his index finger and causing damage to his middle finger.

The female suspect then dealt the victim several lashes to his back with a piece of wood, causing him to suffer additional injuries.

The attack was reported and Smartt was escorted to the Skeldon Public Hospital, where he was seen and examined before being transferred to New Amsterdam Hospital for admission.
