Some patients abandoned at GPH put in homes

Approximately 15 persons who were assumed to be abandoned by their families and left at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) are now staying at homes around Georgetown.

According to information from the Head of Social Work Department, Clayton Neuman, via the GPHC’s Public Relations Department, approximately 15 persons who were left at the hospital this year have been sent to stay at the Palms Geriatric Home in Georgetown and the Hugo Chavez Centre at Onverwagt.

It was also noted that approximately 12 persons were left in the Male Block, six in the Female Block, two children, and about 15 persons were left at the dialysis department. Neuman also related that there is one every month from the maternity department. Public Relations Assistant Delice Neblett also informed that efforts are made to contact the families. However, she noted that while these persons are treated with respect and are given meals and attention, the staff is burnt out and there is patient turnover with no beds. She added that the nursing staff also have to deal with patient dynamics, which includes fights and arguments.

Neblett assured that the hospital will continue working to find family and relatives and when these efforts fail, the hospital will find suitable, comfortable placements for them. This entails continued work with the Palms and other homes to take in patients. She added that the hospital also publicises those patients who have no family contact.
