Ricks and Sari’s Rodrigues Memorial race rides off today

Competitive cycling action returns to West Demerara this morning for the staging of the 16th edition of the Ricks and Sari/ Regan Rodrigues Memorial road race.

The event which is scheduled to roll off from 08:00hrs, is geared towards attracting the cream of the nation’s riders who are keen to keep their tools sharp amid the pandemic.

Today’s 45-mile event will start and end at Schoonord with Parika being the turn back point.

According to the fixture’s organiser, Hassan Mohammed, eight sprint prizes will be up along the trek, while the top six senior finishers will be rewarded with prizes.

The top three riders in the other categories will also earn prizes.

At the completion of the last edition of the race, Akeem Wilkinson of Team Evolution emerged the overall winner. He is expected to return to defend his crown. However, with the likes of the inform Paul DeNobrega, Christopher Griffith, Alex Mendes, Marcus Keiler and the rest of the peloton, Wilkinson may be hard pressed for a repeat.

The family of Rodrigues and the staff of Ricks and Sari Agro Industries Limited will distribute the prizes to the winning cyclists.

Rodrigues was born on February 21, 1948 and passed away on August 4, 2004. During his lifetime he served as the President of Carlton Wheelers Cycling Club and was also a champion race car driver.
