Eagles claw their way past Castrol Strikers

Eagles overcame a one set deficit to secure their second consecutive win in the Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) ‘A’ League, clawing past Castrol Strikers 3-2 on Tuesday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.

Fresh off their commanding win over league leader Young Achievers on Friday, Eagles won two straight sets to claim the unlikely result.

Falling behind 1-2 at the end of the third set, Eagles soared to an initial 6-1 advantage which set the tone of the fourth stanza. Eagles extended their lead in the set, outscoring their foe 5-2 to further strengthen their position at 11-3. Their lead ballooned to 10 points as the score-line climbed to 15-5.

An 8-5 exchange in favour of Castrol Strikers would give their sprinkling of supporters’ hope of a possible comeback as they reduced the deficit to 20-13. However, any hopes of a comeback was extinguished with Eagles closing out the set after outscoring Strikers 5-2 to force a fifth stanza.

The fifth set proved to be a hard-fought affair with Strikers taking the lead 5-2. Eagles responded in equal measure, recording five points, while conceding only two points to level the score at 7-7.

The back-and-forth nature of the set continued as the score remained deadlocked at 10-10, setting up a dramatic finish in pursuit. A 12-12 score-line quickly followed to further highlight the competitiveness of the set. Nonetheless, Eagles sealed the result, as they recorded three unanswered points to win 15-12.

Prior to the dramatic ending, Castrol Strikers seized the early control as the first set ended 25-18. Eagles responded in dominant fashion in the second to level proceedings at 25-13. The sea-saw battle ensued once again, with Castrol Strikers seizing the pivotal third set at 25-22, in the process setting up the eventual conclusion.

The DVA ‘A’ division league features three teams competing over the course of two months. Matches will be staged on Tuesdays and Fridays at the same venue from 19:30hrs. The other competing team is Young Achievers, who will be in action tomorrow at the same venue.
