Five more persons succumb to COVID-19

The Ministry of Health (MoH) yesterday confirmed that five more persons, including a 34-year-old man, who were infected with COVID-19 have died.

Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony is urging persons to continue following preventative measures saying that the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Liliendaal is almost filled to its capacity.

In a statement, the Ministry identified two of the fatalities as a 64-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man from Region Four who both died on September 13, while the third is an 85-year-old woman from Region Six who died on September 6. The fourth and fifth fatalities are a 72-year-old woman who died on September 1, and a 34-year-old man who died on September 3. They are both from Region Three.

So far, for the month of September, 67 persons have already died.

Meanwhile, the MoH dashboard shows that 135 new cases have also been confirmed from 1,158 tests done. Of the new confirmed cases, 65 are from Region Four, 15 from Region Three, 14 from Region Seven, 12 from Region Six, 10 from Region Ten, 8 from Region Five, 2 from Region Two, 1 from Region Eight, and 4 each from regions One and Nine.

According to Anthony, there is a continuous rise of COVID-19 cases in Region Three especially in the Tuschen area which now has 61 active cases.  On the East Bank Demerara in Region Four, there are 460 active cases; 80 in Diamond, 62 in Eccles, 48 cases in Timehri, accounting for the highest number in the area.  On the East Coast Demerara there are 588 active cases with Mon Repos and Enterprise accounting for the highest number.

In Georgetown, there are 682 active cases with the highest numbers in Kitty, Lodge and Sophia. There are 91 active cases in Region Five, 82 in Region Six, 65 in Region Seven with 65 in Bartica. “These are some of the hotspot areas that we are seeing,” the minister disclosed.

There are currently 31 persons in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 149 in institutional isolation, 2,841 in home isolation, and 20 persons in institutional quarantine.  Anthony during yesterday’s COVID-19 update informed that there are 3,092 active cases in Guyana with 104 at the infectious disease hospital in Liliendaal. The others are distributed among the West Demerara Regional, Mahaicony, Bartica and Wismar hospitals.

He subsequently urged persons to adhere to the preventative measures in place noting that the ICU is almost full. “We want to encourage people to follow the measures. All of these things help so it’s not just about vaccination, we still have to follow all the additional measures.”
