Prime Minister Mark Phillips on Wednesday called the opening of Caribbean Cinemas at the Amazonia Mall in Provi-dence, a proud moment for his Government.

According to a press release from his office, he said that the investments being made on the East Bank of Demerara are due to the drive and efforts of the PPP/C.

The East Bank corridor, according to the Prime Minister, is “now exploding with economic opportunities and activities”.

The PM was the guest speaker at the ceremonial opening of the cinemas. This is Caribbean Cine-mas’ second investment here after setting up at the Giftland Mall.

“Guyana’s economy is growing, and this expansion will create rapidly increasing opportunities. The floodgates of economic opportunities have been opened”, he said.

He pointed to last November’s Systematic Country Diagnostic (SCD) of Guyana, which he said highlighted the World Bank’s projections of a three-fold increase over the next 10 years for the country. He said that the World Bank also estimated that Guyana’s per capita GDP can exceed US$16,900 by 2030.

“The next 10 years will be critical in our country’s history. During this time, Guyana will witness an unprecedented rate of modernisation. We are developing a world-class infrastructure to promote modernisation. Our roads and bridges programmes attest to the investments which we are making to build infrastructure that will both support and stimulate economic activities”, he told the gathering.

The Prime Minister pointed to the importance of businesses like the Amazonia Mall and challenged those lagging behind to make the necessary adjustments.

“The local business community cannot remain static. They must aim to grow and expand, including new areas, product lines, services and manufacturing. As the market grows, businesses must be prepared to expand and modernise their operations to seize the economic opportunities which will arise”, he said.

In a release on Wednes-day, Caribbean Cinemas  said that the cinema will feature Hollywood’s newest releases in its  six luxurious auditoriums with giant screens fully equipped with 100% digital projection technology, 3D technology, digital surround sound, high back rocker seats and cup holder arm rests.

As part of the opening  week schedule, Caribbean Cinemas will present new releases: “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”, “Cop Shop”, “Free Guy” and “Space Jam”, among others. It said that  “No Time To Die”, the latest chapter in the 007 franchise with Daniel Craig is confirmed to be released on October 14 and “Dune”, the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 cult sci-fi novel on October 21.

Health and safety protocols will be observed for all visitors and employees at the cinema.  Caribbean Cinemas will operate with 60% capacity to create social distancing by leaving seats and empty rows between parties. Proof of vaccination and an identification card are required from all guests, excluding pregnant women and children under the age of 18. Also, use of a facemask is required always, except when eating.

Caribbean Cinemas is located at Block M Providence and will feature ample parking space for its clients, the release said.
