A robbery convict was yesterday recaptured shortly after he escaped from the Lusignan Prison while working on the facility’s farm.

Deputy Director of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Corporate Communication Unit, Stan Gouveia confirmed that Shamar Prince escaped from custody after 10am yesterday.

Prince, a resident of Amelia’s Ward, Linden is serving two five-year sentences for two counts of armed robbery.

In a statement yesterday, the police said that Prince was working on the prison farm when a truck entered the compound through the eastern gate.

Prince exited the prison compound using the said gate and escaped into the backlands, the police said.

An alarm was raised and ranks from the Vigilance Police Station responded.

A search was carried out in the backlands and Prince was recaptured. He was taken into police custody and later handed over to prison authorities.

There have been numerous episodes, including in recent months, where in-mates have either escaped or attempted to escape from the Lusignan Prison.

Just two weeks ago, double-murder accused Kapildeo Gangadin escaped after “tampering” with the quarantine section of the facility.

He was subsequently recaptured in a minibus enroute to Parika, East Bank Essequibo.

The issue continues to raise questions about security at the facility.

Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn recently said that the new facilities which are being constructed at the Lusignan Prison will be “more secure” and will resolve all of the existing security concerns at the facility.

Three modern facilities are currently being constructed at the Lusignan Prison.  The $1.2B project is expected to be completed by February, 2022.
