Shamar Prince, who escaped from the Lusignan Prison and was recaptured, has been sentenced to three years in jail for his breakout.

Prince, 20, a robbery convict of Amelia’s Ward, was serving two five-year sentences when he escaped from the East Coast prison at 10 am on Wednesday.

He was recaptured and yesterday taken to the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where Magistrate Fabayo Azore handed down the sentence after he pleaded guilty to a charge of escaping lawful custody.

The new sentence is expected to be served concurrently with the two other sentences he is serving.

A Guyana Police Force statement on Wednesday said that Prince was working on the prison farm when a truck entered the compound through the eastern gate. Prince, it noted, exited the prison compound using the same gate and escaped into the backlands. An alarm was raised and ranks from the Vigilance Police Station responded. Prince was later recaptured in the backlands.

There have been numerous episodes, including in recent months, where inmates have either escaped or attempted to escape from the Lusignan Prison. Double-murder accused Kapildeo Gangadin escaped two weeks ago. He was subsequently recaptured in a minibus en route to Parika, East Bank Essequibo.
