A Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo man was denied bail after being charged with trafficking over $113 million worth of cocaine.

Ryan DaSilva was arraigned at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday when Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty read the charge to him. He denied that on December 18, at Tuschen, he had in his possession, 17.4 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

DaSilva was represented by attorney-at-law Dexter Todd who made an application for bail. However, Magistrate McGusty denied bail and adjourned the matter until January 21.

The court was told that on the day in question, ranks attached to the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU), were acting on information when they conducted a narcotics operation in the vicinity of Tuschen to Parika. Fifteen brick-like parcels of cocaine were reported to have been discovered during the operation. CANU reported that during one of the operations, a motor vehicle which was driven by DaSilva, was stopped and searched. It was in this vehicle that the 17.4 kilogrammes of cocaine, which has a street value of approximately $113,160,000, was found.

DaSilva was arrested and taken to the CANU headquarters at Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown.
