GPL suffers another shutdown

On Wednesday, at approximately 10:48 am, the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) experienced a shutdown due to a trip on the L16 Transmission Line, which links the Company’s New Sophia to Good Hope Substations.

A statement from the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) said that at the time of the trip, the Transmission Line was transferring approximately 16 Megawatts of generation.

Further, the trip caused the station transformer at the Kingston 2 generating facility to go offline from under-voltage, resulting in a further loss of 20 Megawatts of generation.

GPL said that restoration commenced immediately to return power to affected customers. At approximately 10:59 am, incremental restoration began in Demerara and continued until all areas in Demerara and Berbice were repowered at approximately 11:40 am.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the root cause of the shutdown, GPL said. Customers will be updated when these investigations are completed.

Wednesday’s shutdown was the latest in a series that GPL has been experiencing.
