Lloyd Narian who had been accused of the March 2020 murder of Leland Couchman has been freed after High Court Judge Jo-Ann Barlow on Tuesday upheld a no-case submission made on his behalf.

The charge against Narain had been that he murdered Couchman on March 6th, 2020.

Following the close of the prosecution’s case on Tuesday, defence attorney Lachmi Dindayal had advanced that the State had failed to establish a prima facie case against his client; and he therefore had no case to answer.

In the circumstances, the lawyer asked that the matter be withdrawn from the jury.

Finding that the prosecution had failed to establish a case against the accused, Justice Barlow upheld the defence’s submissions and directed the jury to return a formal verdict of not guilty.

Narian was then informed that he had been discharged of the capital indictment and was free to go.

The State’s case presented by prosecutor Tiffini Lyken, had been that on the day in question, Narain had beaten Couchman, whose body was discovered sometime after.
