Mayor’s Cup Inter Ward/Village football tourney commences today

The Annual Mayor’s Cup nine-a-side Inter Ward/ Village knockout football tournament will commence today after a two-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Organised by former national footballer/coach Lennox Arthur, today’s tournament will take place at the Den Amstel Centre ground.

The quarterfinals, semis and finals will be played on April 17th at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda.

Teams will compete for the first prize of $600,000, sponsored by Mid Atlantic Oil and Gas Company with $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 going to the second, third and fourth placed teams.

Arthur is calling on other sponsors to come on board to ensure the success of the tournament.

Teams and fixtures for the Inter Ward/Village tournament are:-West Demerara – Den Amstel, Uitvlugt, Pouderoyen, Stewartville, Wales, Sara Lodge, West Side Masters, Belle West All Stars and Back Street Kings.  

East Coast – Mahaica, Brush Dam, Buxton Youth Developers, Melanie, Ann’s Grove, Golden Grove, Beterverwagting (BV), Victoria, Plaisance, Liliendaal and Turkeyen.  

Georgetown – Charles-town, Campbellville, Bourda All Stars, Road Warriors, Tucville and Sparta Boss.  

East Bank – Timehri, Mocha and Agricola.  

Berbice – New Amsterdam, Mahaicony and Airy Hall All Stars.  

Today’s opening encounter will see
Back Street Kings against Sara Lodge to be followed by Pouderoyen against Stewartville, Uitvlugt against Wales and Den Amstel against West Side Masters.

The second round of matches will see the game one winners opposing the winner of games three while the winners of games two and four will also meet.

Matches will continue on April 3 at Buxton, April 9 and 10 at GFC and April 17 at GFC.

Games will be of two 20-minute halves and there will be no offside rules. Teams will also be allowed five substitutions.

The tournament is a straight knockout one with no extra time being played. A tie at the end of regulation will result in a sudden death penalty shootout.  

All other FIFA rules are applicable and the referee will be the sole authority of matches. Teams showing up late beyond a reasonable time determined by the organisers will be disqualified and their game forfeited via walkover.
