Wakenaam man loses house, business to fire

A Belle Plaine, Wakenaam,  Region Three man is counting his losses after his house and business went up in flames yesterday.

The incident occurred  around 3 am on the Essequibo River island.

Anil Rambarran, the owner, was in a state of shock after the fire and had to be rushed to the Wakenaam Cottage hospital. He and his wife, Nadira managed to escape the fire unhurt but were immediately rushed to the hospital suffering from high blood pressure.

through the entire upper and lower flat. Nothing was saved after the fire and millions of dollars went up in flames. Rambarran owned  Anil’s Liquor and Variety Store. He is also the operator of a speed boat service. He is the sole distributor of DDL and Banks DIH products on the island of Wakenaam.

Residents from the community said they woke up and ran over to render assistance but the fire quickly gutted the businessman’s upper flat.

“We stood just watching, Rambarran is a good man to this community and we are all with him, we are sorry for his loss,” a resident said.  

All the businessman’s jewellery, a quantity of cash and items from his store also went up in flames. Regional officials and  fire officers also visited. An investigation has been launched.

Wakenaam does not have a fire station. Firemen from Leonora in Region Three and Anna Regina in Region Two were on the scene yesterday.

Minister in the Ministry of Public Works Deodat Indar also visited the scene yesterday.
