Eagles battles past determined Venguy

Eagles soared past newcomer Venguy 3-1 when the Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) senior men’s first division league continued Tuesday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.

The first set proved to be the most competitive with Venguy battling to a 25–23 score to take a 1-0 advantage. However, Eagles responded in equal measure to start the second set, romping to a 4-1 lead. A 6-4 exchange then extended the lead for the Eagles unit at 10-5.

Venguy fought back to reduce the deficit at 12-10 following a 5-2 exchange. The Venguy momentum was quickly extinguished as an identical 5-2 blitz from Eagles pushed the score to 17-12.

A 6-5 exchange then led to a 23-17 Eagles advantage and, although Venguy briefly threatened to overcome the deficit at 23-20 following a 3-0 run, Eagles eventually prevailed due to a 2-1 blitz to level the score.

The second set started off with three episodes of locked scores at 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6 as both teams struggled to impose their wills. However, a 5-1 charge from the Eagles unit secured an 11-7 advantage. A response was immediate from Venguy who reduced the deficit to 14-12 owing to a 5-3 exchange.

Eagles, however, maintained their marginal advantage at 19-16. Nonetheless, the deficit proved to be a stumbling block for Venguy and Eagles secured the second set and a 2-1 lead following a 6-5 run.

A dominant fourth set capped off the come-from-behind result with Eagles leading by as much as 12 points in the lopsided set. A 5-2 start, led to a 9-3 advantage as Eagles created early distance between the two sides. A 5-2 exchange further extended the lead at 14-5, before a 4-1 run propelled the score to 18-6.

Although Venguy pulled within six points of the Eagles lead at 23-17 due to an 11-5 charge, two unanswered points by the latter secured the result at 25-17. The tournament continues tomorrow at the same venue. Castrol Strikers will oppose the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in the lone encounter at 19:30hrs.
