GDF outflanks VenGuy at volleyball

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) outflanked VenGuy 3-1 when the Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) senior men’s league continued Tuesday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.

Falling behind 0-1 after losing the opening set 25-27, VenGuy, after two incidents of locked scores at 7-7 and 8-8, raced ahead at 13-11. A 2-0 run further extended VenGuy’s advantage to 15-11.

However, a 7-6 exchange in favour of GDF marginally reduced the deficit at 21-18. Nonetheless, four unanswered points by VenGuy sealed the set at 25-18 and leveled the contest at 1-1. The third set started brightly for VenGuy who stormed to a 4-1 lead. GDF replied in equal measure, leveling the score at 6-6 compliments of a 5-2 blitz.

A 4-4 exchange failed to separate the teams at 10-10. This was followed by three further occurrences of tied scores at 13-13, 14-14 and 16-16 as both sides struggled to seize control of the encounter. However, a 4-2 charge from GDF secured a 20-18 advantage, before a 5-1 exchange sealed the set at 25-19 and the lead at 2-1.

The fourth set mirrored the previous set, as VenGuy once again seized the early control at 4-1. This lead was quickly extinguished, as a 6-3 charge restored parity to proceedings at 7-7.

A 5-1 to exchange propelled GDF into the proverbial driver’s seat at 12-8. However, VenGuy reduced the deficit at 12-13 owing to a 4-1 blitz. The sea-saw nature of the contest continued as GDF stormed to a 7-0 run to secure a commanding 20-12 advantage.

VenGuy briefly threatened with a late charge to reduce GDF’s lead at 23-17. However, a 2-2 exchange extinguished any hopes of a comeback, sealing the set at 25-19 and the 3-1 win for the GDF unit. The event continues at the same venue tomorrow from 19:15hrs. Eagles will oppose Young Achievers in the lone encounter.
