George Paton, one of the three men accused of the 2018 murder of Bourda Market cheese vendor Troy Ramalho, who was shot during a robbery, is now awaiting his sentencing after pleading to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

At his arraignment yesterday morning, Paton denied the capital charge read to him but copped to the lesser count.

He admitted that he unlawfully killed Ramalho on August 15, 2018, at Robb Street, Bourda, during the course or furtherance of a robbery.

Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall has deferred sentencing until March 29 to facilitate the presentation of a probation report.

The offender was represented by defence attorney Adrian Thompson, while the State was represented by prosecutor Lisa Cave.

The case was called at the Demerara High Court.

Ramalho, 45, was shot once to the chest while reportedly resisting three men who attempted to rob him of his jewellery.

A witness had told police that the gunman discharged a round at Ramalho, who fell instantly.

His accomplices then relieved him of his jewellery and quickly fled the scene.

Ramalho was subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
