Duo remanded over trafficking of $1.7m cannabis

Two men were yesterday remanded to prison after they were allegedly busted by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) with $1.7 million of cannabis at Diamond, East Bank Demerara.

Andrew Carew, 42, called ‘Daddo’ of Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), and 47-year-old Rayanthony Persaud of Victoria Avenue, EBD, appeared at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Sunil Scarce where the charges were read to them separately.

According to the Magistrate, on March 22 at Diamond, New Housing Scheme, EBD, Persaud had in his possession 5.754 kilogrammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Carew was charged for supplying the cannabis to Persaud and for also having 530 grammes of cannabis with a street value of $159,000 in a room at his home.

Both men pleaded not guilty to their charges and were remanded to prison. The duo will make their next court appearance on May 12.

The CANU prosecutor told the court that ranks were conducting an exercise when they observed Persaud sitting in a motorcar which was parked in front of a house in Diamond. They then saw Persaud exit the car and go to a vehicle driven by Carew. Persaud was observed receiving a box and both men went into a house.

The officers subsequently apprehended the men and searched the box where the 6 parcels of suspected cannabis were found inside and which amounted to $1.7 million.

CANU had initially reported that acting on intelligence, they conducted an operation in the above-mentioned area during which six parcels of suspected cannabis were discovered. The cannabis was weighed at CANU’s headquarters where it amounted to 5.7 kg with a street value of $6.3 million.
