Everest in driver’s seat after Looknauth’s 58 against GCC

The Georgetown Cricket Association’s Noble House Seafood second-division two-day semi-finals got underway yesterday with Everest in control against Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) and Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) leading Malteenoes Sports Club by six runs.

At GCC, the hosts won the toss and inserted Everest who managed 207 all out in 66.5 overs before GCC closed the day on 34 for three with Javed Rasheed (2-4) removing promising youngsters, Mavindra Dindayal and Zachary Jodah.

Richie Looknauth played a pivotal innings of 58 from 139 balls, laced with six boundaries before softly patting a simple catch to Bernard Bailey at short cover off of left-arm spinner, Stephon Wilson.

The right hander shared a 60-run stand with Troy Gonsalves who made 32 from 50 balls with three fours and a six before being bowled by Thaddeous Lovell. Matthew Nandu got a decent start with a 72-ball 38 before he was run out at the non-striker’s end. Dwayne Adams also got a good start with 28 while Denesh Mangal made 22.

Off-spinner, Krsna Singh picked up 2-23 while Wilson, Bailey and Joash Charles bagged a wicket each.

Over at DCC, left-arm spinner, Daniel Mootoo bagged 5-49 while Steven Sankar took 3-45 and Nkosi Beaton 2-4 to restrict Malteenoes to 143 in 37.3 overs with Stephon Brown top scoring with 30. Shemroy Barrington chipped in with 29 while cameos came from Marcus Watkins (24), Clarence Baird (16) and Mervin Permaul (14).

In DCC’s second innings, Brown romped through the top order to pick up 6-35 and the hosts were struggling at 68 for eight before Carlton Jacques came to the crease and made 50 not out from 70 balls. His innings featured three sixes and two fours and he added 49 for the ninth wicket with Mootoo who made 27 from 69 balls. Nichosie Barker took 3-27.

The matches resume today with the four teams vying for spots in the final.
