CARIFTA Games athletes to stay sharp this weekend

The management team for the CARIFTA Games has been named by the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) and the body will host its ‘Super Champs’ event on Sunday pitting the Games bound athletes against the cream of the nation’s athletes.

These details were disclosed yesterday by President of the AAG, Aubrey Hutson, in an update to the media.

Hutson informed that Nadine Trotz will act in the capacity of Manager for the Easter weekend CARIFTA Games in Jamaica, while Sham Johnny and Raymond Daw are the Coaches selected for the sojourn.

Meanwhile, Hutson disclosed that the ‘Super Champs’ fixture which gets underway at 10:00hrs at the National Track and Field Centre will be staged to keep the competitive juices of the teen athletes flowing ahead of the 49th edition of the event in the ‘Land of Wood and Water’.

“We have to keep our athletes sharp, so this race meet will give our CARIFTA athletes some competition ahead of Jamaica” Hutson explained yesterday.

Hutson also disclosed that besides the nine qualifiers, the AAG is looking at three others athletes, sprinters Ezekiel Newton and Karese Lloyd, along with middle-distance runner Hannah Joseph to take to Jamaica to represent the Golden Arrowhead at the Games since they were agonizingly close to achieving the qualifying standard.

The deadline for selection is imminent.

The nine confirmed representatives are Wesley Tyndall, Anisha Gibbons, Keliza Smith, Attoya Harvey, Adriel Austin, Shamar Horatio, Naris McPherson (800m) along with Javon Roberts (800m) and triple jumper Trevon Hamer.

Smith, 18, punched her ticket in the 100m and 200m, Tyndall (long jumper) and Gibbons (javelin) qualified in the field events while Austin and Harvey went under the qualifying standard in the 800m and 1500m.

Horatio, 19, qualified for the blue ribbon Boys 17-19 100m and 200m events.
