The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) commenced training of a provisional men’s roster at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue yesterday in preparation for the South American Confederation Championships in Ecuador.

GVI president and head coach Levi Nedd said the squad is preparing for the South American Confederation tournament which is tentatively scheduled for October in Ecuador.

He added that the final date will be confirmed at the South American congress in Brazil, April 13th.

“The South American Confederation Games is scheduled to be held in October but the date will be confirmed at the congress in Brazil. The Congress is on the 13th of April and I will arrive on the 11th.”

According to Nedd, both the male and female provisional rosters will train monthly until the team is shortlisted and eventually finalized for the tournament.

“The first Sunday of every month will be training for the males and the third Sunday of every month will be for the females. This will occur right up until the shortlisting happens for both teams,” he expounded.

Presently, 30 male and female players have been shortlisted by the federation for trials and the respective rosters are expected to be reduced to 16 players apiece. Devendra Samaroo will serve as an assistant coach during the entirety of the process.

Meanwhile, the GVF also commenced their nursery programme yesterday.

“They are going to be training monthly, they will coincide with the national teams and will also continue with their clubs and association,” declared Nedd.
