Construction worker Clincy David is now awaiting sentencing after a jury yesterday afternoon found him guilty of raping a 13-year-old girl two years ago.

Following hours of deliberations, the 12-member panel returned with unanimous verdicts, convicting David on a first count of attempting to rape the teen on April 8, 2020 and on the second count of sexually penetrating her on July 13, 2020.

Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, however, deferred the convict’s sentencing until June 10 to first hear from probation, psychiatric and other social impact reports.

The State’s case, led by Prosecutor Cicelia Corbin, had been that David, who was 44 years old at the time, raped the young girl on her thirteenth birthday after first attempting the dastardly act on her.

David maintained that he was innocent of the charges levelled against him.

He was represented by defence attorney Teriq Mohammed, while the State was represented by Corbin, in association with prosecutors Caressa Henry and Paneeta Persaud.

The trial proceedings were held in-camera at the Sexual Offences Court of the Demerara High Court.
