The body of the man who went missing in the boat mishap in the Canje Creek on Friday evening was yesterday afternoon discovered a short distance away from the Canje Bridge and near to where the incident happened.

Richard John, 39, of Edinburgh Village, East Bank Berbice and his girlfriend, Shellon Williamson, 27, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam went missing during the 8.49 pm mishap.  The body of Richard John was yesterday identified by his brother, Dennis John.

According to information gathered, the two missing persons along with two of John’s brothers were heading into the Canje Creek when a short distance away from the Canje Bridge they discovered that the tug was taking in water

The tug eventually capsized leaving the two persons missing.

Dennis John had told Stabroek News that he was the captain of the small tug. He had explained, that he was cooking when Williamson informed them that water was coming into the tug through a “big hole” in the lower part where she was resting at the time.

He said they all rushed to the bow of the boat where she was and they then discovered that the water was already knee high. According to him, they quickly attempted to bail the tug but it began to lean on one side due to the accumulation of water.

It was at that point that the boat captain and his now missing brother began to climb up since the water was getting rough. However, he said, while he made it to the upper part where his other brother was, Richard did not. Williamson was believed to have been trapped below.

The tug was later pulled up but the bodies of the two missing persons were not seen.
