The Sophia woman who died after falling under a moving truck on Thursday had suffered a stroke and had begun using a stick to get around.

Yvonne Morrison, 65, was fatally struck by the garbage truck while on her way to visit her sister and her family wants a full investigation.

Morrison’s daughter told Stabroek News that her mother usually walked with a stick because she had had stroke. At the time of the incident her mother was heading to her sister’s residence. She stated that the driver said he saw her walking and sounded the truck’s horn. She stopped for him to pass and few seconds after he heard the porters shouting for him to stop. She said her mother was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she succumbed while receiving treatment. The post-mortem examination revealed that her mother suffered injuries to her hip resulting in her death.

The police had said on Thursday that enquiries revealed that the driver involved in the accident was Tulsiedas Sugrim, 45. Sugrim was employed as a driver at Puran Brothers Trucking and Disposal Services.

According to a statement from the police, Morrison was walking west, in front of the garbage truck which was heading in the same direction.

The driver stated that while he was proceeding along the road, he sounded the truck’s horn and the woman stopped and allowed him to pass.

However, as the truck was moving forward, Sugrim further stated that the woman allegedly lost her balance and fell onto the road surface and under the moving garbage truck, which resulted in the left rear wheel pinning her.
