Hosts Georgetown Football Club (GFC), created the first major upset in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Senior Men’s League, defeating two-time national champion Fruta Conquerors 2-1 last evening.

Jerome Harrigon gave the visitors the lead, as he directed his header into the back of the net in the ninth minute, following a left-sided corner kick.

GFC was then given the perfect opportunity to equalize in the 12th minute, after being awarded a penalty kick. However, Deon Alfred failed to hit the target from the distance as he fired his effort over the crossbar.

The Bourda-based outfit would be given another opportunity to restore parity to proceedings, as they were awarded another penalty kick in the 46th. Calvin Shepherd was tasked with the responsibility from the distance, and did not disappoint as he fired his effort into the lower right corner.

A horrendous goalkeeping error then gifted GFC the 2-1 lead in the 80th minute, as the advancing goalkeeper inexplicably missed an attempted clearance, allowing the onrushing Alberto Basanta to slot home unchallenged into the empty net. In an earlier exhibition match, Black Pearl defeated Santos 3-1.
