Power problem scuppers Airy Hall, Buxton football match

The feature contest between Airy Hall Stars and Buxton Stars in the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA) Senior Men’s League, was abandoned due to a power failure at the Buxton Community Centre ground on Saturday evening.

The community suffered a blackout, which rendered the lights inoperable minutes before the commencement of the fixture, as the players were ready to enter the playing surface. It was decided by the league officials, and referee that the match will be postponed.

General Secretary of the EDFA Gidell Austin during a brief comment stated that the community centre suffers from an electrical issue, which hindered the match from being staged.

He explained, “Apparently this particular area does suffer from low voltage, they have some issue with a transformer, and it controls the entire area so there was a blackout. I can’t at the moment give a date as to when the match will be replayed, we will try and fit it soon. We have two other matches that were washed out that we have to replay as well. We might have to stage games in the midweek to sort out this issue.”

Meanwhile, in the second match, Melanie dismantled Haslington All-Stars 4-0. Two goals on either side of halftime sealed the lopsided contest. Shaquan Thomas slammed his effort into the back of the net in the ninth minute to commence the rout.

The lead was then doubled, as Colin Henriques found the back of the net in the 16th minute. Following the resumption of play in the second stanza, Samuel Cockfield got into the scoring act with a 51st minute strike into the far corner.

Teshawn Gordon then sealed the result, as he made his presence felt compliments of a 62nd minute conversion.
