Claude Stewart, a former supervisor at Lenders Jewellery and Pawn Shop, was charged on Friday with stealing over $7 million from the business.

Stewart, 39, of Castello Housing Scheme, West La Penitence, was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in a city court, where the charge was read to him.

The charge alleged that Stewart, between November 20, 2020 and May 24, 2022, at Bourda, and while being employed as a supervisor at the pawn shop, stole $7.1 million, which was the property of Collin Barker.

According to the case against Stewart, during the dates mentioned, he secretly packaged odd items instead of gold items into envelopes and paid himself a total of $7.1 million.

It was said that he packaged 27 envelopes in total, bearing the names of unknown persons and which also contained odd items, such as nail clips and keys.

The father of two pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $250,000. Although granted bail, he was, however, also ordered to report to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters every Monday until the conclusion of the matter.

The man is expected to make his next court appearance on July 22, 2022.
