G/town defeats West Dem by five wickets

Georgetown secured a five-wicket win over West Demerara in the Demerara Cricket Board Under-19 100-Over tournament yesterday at La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara.

West Demerara won the toss and opted to bat but were bowled out for a paltry 87 in 41.2 overs. Georgetown, who had 48 overs to get to the target, required just 33.1 overs to reach 88 but lost five wickets along the way.

West Demerara captain, Sachin Balgobin, top scored with 30 from 82 balls. He struck one six before being trapped leg before wicket to Dave Mohabir. Avinash Rajkumar chipped in with a 40-ball 15 while openers, Anthony Sanchara and Nicholas Rajpat made 14 runs each.

Mohabir ended with 6-8, his second six-wicket haul this week, while Kelvin Gordon, Rivaldo Phillips, Riyad Latif, and Myhiem Khan, picked up one wicket a piece as West Demerara lost their final six wickets for just seven runs.

Georgetown’s chase was piloted by Shamar Yearwood with 23 runs from 32 balls, clearing the boundary cleanly twice while hitting one four. He was supported by Khan who made a 78-ball 22 along with Ryan Latif with 14 and Ezekiel Wilson with 12.

Avinash Rajkumar picked up 2-9 while Navinra Sankar, Vishal Persaud, and Stuart Hoppie, returned one wicket each.
