Bandit fatally shot by La Grange householder

A bandit who has been identified as Learone Forde died after he was shot while attempting to rob a family at La Grange on the West Bank of Demerara (WBD) in the wee hours of yesterday.

The attempted robbery which was committed by Forde and another male occurred at about 01:30hrs yesterday morning at an apartment which is located at Lot 3 Unity Street, La Grange, WBD.

According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), at about 22:00hrs on Tuesday, the victims, 34-year-old Anil Singh and his wife, Christina Singh, 32, retired to bed. Early the following morning, at about 01:15hrs, they were awakened by the sound of their window being forcefully opened.

As a result of the noise, the husband got up, armed himself with his licensed .32 Taurus pistol, and went and stood behind his bedroom door, while his wife remained on their bed.

Subsequently, the two suspects who were armed with a cutlass and a crowbar, barged into the bedroom whereupon Singh shot  Forde in his leg causing him to fall to the ground.

It was said that the other suspect then escaped.

According to Singh’s wife, after Forde was shot, he then started to beg Singh to take his life. A scuffle then ensued between the injured suspect and Singh which resulted in several more rounds being fired, which caused further gunshot injuries to the suspect and also to Singh.

The police were then summoned to the scene where they saw the injured suspect with several gunshot wounds about his head and body lying in a pool of blood. His body was taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home where it currently awaits a post-mortem examination.

Singh also suffered gunshot wounds about his body. He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and admitted.

The couple’s apartment is attached to the northern side of a two-storied concrete structure at the said address in a fenced yard.

According to the police, persons could gain access through a metal gate facing east which is secured by means of bolt and padlock and opens onto to the La Grange public road.

Investigators canvassed the area for CCTV cameras and the scene was processed. Five spent shells of .32 ammunition, 4 live rounds and 2 metal fragments suspected to be bullets were found.

Singh’s licensed pistol was also lodged.
