Health Ministry clerk charged with causing death of Lusignan pedestrian

A Ministry of Health clerk was last Friday charged with causing the death of 53-year-old Prahalad Sawh of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara (ECD), who he struck while riding his motorcycle along the Lusignan Public Road.

Leon Lewis, 31, of Annandale, ECD, appeared before Sparendaam Magistrate Roshelle Liverpool and he pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

It is alleged that Lewis, on August 15, 2022, at Lusignan Public Road, drove motorcycle CL 4502 in manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Sawh.

The man was then granted bail in the sum of $500,000 and the matter was adjourned until October 13, 2022.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) had reported that Lewis was riding motorcycle CL 4502 east along the southern lane of the northern carriageway of the Lusignan Public Road, where he claimed he was behind an unknown minibus and suddenly saw a shadow walked out from south to north across the road.

Lewis further claimed that when the bus passed, he saw Sawh in front of him crossing and due to him being in close proximity, he crashed into the now deceased man, causing him to fall onto the road surface.

It was said that Lewis then picked up his motorcycle and drove away from the scene. He went to Dr Balwant Singh’s Hospital to seek medical treatment and it was there he was sought by the police.

The driver of a car, PVV 854, who was behind Lewis, had told the police that while proceeding east along the road, he saw someone lying on the roadway and despite trying to divert north to avoid a collision, he ran over the said person.  As a result, the police and ambulance were summoned to the scene, where a doctor pronounced Sawh dead.
