Four nabbed after CANU finds suspected imported ganja

The Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) yesterday intercepted a motor vehicle carrying a quantity of cannabis and four men were arrested.

According to a CANU Facebook post, the unit was conducting an operation at a residence in Middle Street, South Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara when they intercepted a motor vehicle with four occupants. 

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of four parcels of suspected cannabis and the arrest of the occupants. The post further said that Erwin Chappelle, 24; Doodnauth Bhagwandin, 35; Kevin Ramgoolam, 27; and Mark Barton, 29, were escorted along with the narcotics to CANU headquarters where it tested positive for cannabis. It had a total weight of 1.750 kg, with a street value of approximately $2.8 million (approximately US$13,500).

This variety of cannabis is known as ‘Kush’ and is suspected to have been imported into Guyana from North America.
