Lal Bahadur Byjoo, who was recently intercepted by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) with close to 120 pounds of cannabis, was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with trafficking narcotics.

Byjoo, 58, of Lot 50 Plantation Hope, Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice (WCB), appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendeem Magistrate’s Court, where he denied the allegation of having 54.2 kilogrammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking on September 24, at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Magistrate George, however, refused bail and the man was remanded to prison. He will make his next court appearance on November 1, when the matter will be called again.

In a statement, CANU had said that its officers had conducted an operation at Beterverwagting, Railway Embankment\ Line Top where they intercepted a Route 50 minibus bearing licence plate BXX 6792.

A search of the minibus was conducted in the presence of the Byjoo, who was the lone occupant, and it led to the discovery of several parcels of suspected cannabis.

He was then arrested and escorted to CANU headquarters along with the suspected narcotics, which was confirmed to be cannabis. The 54.2 kilogrammes are equivalent to 119.45 pounds.
