Gairy ‘Superman’ St Clair, the former IBF world junior-lightweight champion, is on a mission to make Guyana the `Las Vegas of Boxing’ in the Region in the near future.

The Australian based St. Clair is currently here making the rounds and pulling out the stops in order to stage a mega year-end Pro/Am card, the first of many since he hopes to give the sport a shot in the arm and make boxing cards a regular feature in the 592.

According to St Clair, a December 16 event is on the cards after the boxing board signed on to be in his corner yesterday.

“We have the full support of Mr. (Peter) Abdool and the boxing board to host this event on the 16th of December, so I am thankful for that and we will be making a lot more announcements in the coming days.”

A venue is still to be finalized but the card is tentatively set for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

The now retired 47 year-old who won the IBF world title in 2006, told this publication that the event is shaping up to have three world title fights involving Dexter ‘De Kid’ Marques, Stephan Da Silva and a pair of Australians, Connie Chung and Kaitlyn Lodge. “Dexter will be fighting for the World Boxing League (WBL) super flyweight world title, Stephan for the featherweight WBL title and we will have a rematch between Chung and Lodge.

The opponents for Marques and Da Silva will be announced shortly.

Da Silva defeated Fiji’s William Mel at St Clair’s Superhero Pro Fight Night in Sydney, Australia  to become the new WBL Junior Lightweight World Title holder earlier this month.

St. Clair did confirm that he has spoken to the brass of the amateur association and four fights in that segment will be carded.

The former world champ further revealed that prior to his departure on Monday, he plans to engage government officials, the public and the private sector in an effort “to get everyone’s support to make this card a success.”
