Rose Hall man chopped while reclaiming bicycle

A Corentyne man is now a patient in a serious condition at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after he was attacked and chopped about his body on Friday afternoon while attempting to reclaim his bicycle.

Commander of Region Six Senior Superintendent Shivpersaud Bacchus yesterday confirmed that the suspect in the attack was arrested.

According to information gathered by this newspaper, Lawrence Rodrigues, 56, a labourer of Rose Hall, Corentyne loaned his bicycle and pressure pot to the suspect, 26, a cane harvester, also of Rose Hall.

Rodrigues went to retrieve his bicycle from the suspect on Friday after the man failed to return it after several days. But after Rodrigues removed the bicycle from in front of the suspect’s premises, an argument ensued during which the suspect armed himself with a cutlass.

Stabroek News was told that the man chased Rodrigues with the cutlass along the roadway until he finally caught up with him and began attacking.

A video recorded by a witness shows that Rodrigues fell off of the bicycle on the road when his assailant began inflicting the chops. Rodrigues attempted to shield himself with the bicycle.

Rodrigues was later taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, from where he was later transferred to the New Amster-dam Public Hospital.
