Berbice trounce Demerara by 189 runs after Bramble ton

Berbice dominated Demerara in the Guyana Cricket Board Senior Inter-County 50-over tournament yesterday at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground to secure a 189-run win.

Berbice won the toss and opted to bat after rain reduced the contest to a 45-over affair and piled on 363 for six from  their allotment. Demerara could only muster 174 all out in 29.3 overs in front of a few hundred spectators.

Bramble led the Berbice batting order with a responsible 106 from 83 balls. He stroked two sixes and 12 fours before leg spinner, Steven Sankar, trapped the opener, leg before wicket.

Shimron Hetmyer made a brisk 58.

Bramble shared a 91-run opening stand with debutant and national youth batsman, Rampertab Ramnauth who made 36 from 50 balls. The partnership ended when Christopher Barnwell had Ramnauth leg before wicket in the 14th over after the batsman had struck four boundaries.

With Ramnauth in the shed, Hetmyer joined Bramble to put on 105 runs  for th second wicket in just 77 balls.

The left-hander, Hetmyer, raced to 58 from 46 balls, muscling three sixes and two fours before a leading edge saw the ball going straight up and landing in Leon Johnson’s safe hands.

Foo picked up where Hetmyer left off and rocketed to 71 from 45 balls. His innings was decorated with four sixes, two of which landed on the roof of the Rohan Kanhai stand over the straight boundary and five fours but he was eventually caught at mid-wicket by Johnson.

Foo had shared an 88-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Romario Shepherd who chipped in with 40 from 28 balls.

Ronaldo Alimohamed picked up three late wickets to end with 3-66 while Sankar, Qumar Torrington and Barnwell picked up one wicket each.

Johnson, who was dropped on three by Bramble off of Shepherd looked set to lead his side to victory reaching 51 from 47 balls before left-arm spinner, Gudakesh Motie trapped him leg before wicket.

Johnson struck seven fours, four of which were taken from a 19-run, sixth over bowled by Nial Smith and one six as he added 85 for the third wicket with Tagenarine Chanderpaul.

Chanderpaul was also removed by Motie after making 39 from 50 balls. Akshaya Persaud was the only other batsman to put up resistance with 37. The Berbice spinners dominated with skipper, Veerasammy Permaul leading the way with 3-30.

Kevin Sinclair ended with 3-42 while Motie ended with 2-32.
