National Jr., badminton tournament serves off

The Guyana Badminton Association’s National junior’s championship got underway at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with several entertaining bouts Thursday.

In the boy’s Under-19 singles, Xavio Alexander brushed aside Frank Waddell 21-10, 21-14 while Aiden Bhagwandin defeated Micheal Moorsalin 21-15, 21-12. Jonathan Robinson secured victory over Matthew Spooner in a close contest,  eventually prevailing 21-19, 22-20. In the other matches, Raah Russell defeated Karsen Abrams (21-17, 21-18), Haresh Persaud beat Juan Ferreira (21-17, 21-18), Viraj Singh got past Jedidiah Uwagboe (21-12, 21-17) and Manav Sharma blew past Nathan Morrison (21-11, 21-6).

Over in the boy’s Under-17 singles Uwagboe beat Nikolas Pollard (21-3, 21-3), Persaud defeated Avinash Ramnarine 21-16, 18-21, 21-11, Bhagwandin got the better of Gabriel Felix 21-9, 21-10 while Spooner brushed aside Moorsalin 21-6, 21-12 and Waddell earned a victory over Morrison 21-6, 21-10. In the final match of the division, Robinson secured a 21-12, 21-16 victory over Abrams.

In the youngest category, the boy’s Under-15 singles, Bhagwandin got the better of Ruel Rambirichie in a one-sided affair that ended 21-4, 21-8. Micah Holder defeated Nikolas Pollard 21-14, 21-5. Jaqaun Nedd and Nicholas Sawh had a keenly contested battle but Nedd emerged victorious 21-19, 15-21, 21-15.

In the female division, Malia Haley got the better of Alyssa Dick in a tight tussle that ended 21-15, 16-21, 21-16 while Navaeh Eastman conquered Genvieve Bookram 21-13, 21-5 in the girls Under-19 division.

 In the Under-15 girls singles, Bookram suffered a second defeat of the day, this time at the hands Gabrielle Felix, 21-16, 21-11. Haley got past Tanuja Netram 21-5, 21-6 while Eastman stormed past Maleeah Hinckson 21-2, 21-1.

The action continues today at the same venue.
