Beharry dominates national badminton junior tournament

The Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) closed off the national junior championships over the weekend completing three days of intense action at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.

And, according to the association, all the winners will be chosen to represent Guyana at the upcoming Inter-Guiana Games set for November 25 to 27.

In the girls under-11 singles, Gianna Ramnarine copped first place ahead of Rio Alexander. Ramnarine also won the  under-13 singles with Himanshi Kumar finished second.

Mishka Beharry copped four gold medals as the national junior badminton championships climaxed.

Kumar and Gabrielle Felix reigned supreme in the under-13 girls doubles with Maleah Hinckson and Tanuja Netram second.

In the girls under-15 singles, Mishka Beharry dominated while Malia Haley was the runner-up. Naveah Eastman and Felix finished third. Eastman and Haley teamed up to win the under-15 girls doubles, beating Genevieve Bookram and Kumar in the final with Netram and Hinckson finishing third.

Beharry also won the under-17 female singles over Alyssa Dick, the duo then teaming up to win the girls under-19 doubles, beating Alima Eastman and Bookram. Naveah Eastman and Malia Haley finished third.

Beharry would go on to win the girls under-19 singles with Alima Eastman second followed by Naveah Eastman and Haley in joint third.

Over in the boys division, John Thomas walked away the champion in the under-11 category while Francis Thomas settled for second followed by Manvir Sharma and Joel Rambiriche.

Thomas and Ruel Rambiriche won the under-13 doubles over Vivaan Shivnauth and Sergio Alexander. Ruel Rambiriche however, defeated John Thomas to win the under-13 singles as Shivnauth and Alexander finished third.

In the under-15 singles. Xavio Alexander was crowned champion over Aiden Bhagwandin while Nathan Morrison and Aviansh Ramnarine copped third place.

Gabriel Felix and Nikolas Pollard conquered the under-15 doubles division over Ramnarine and Ruel Rambiriche with Jaquan Nedd and Nathan Jarvis rounding off the podium.

Felix and Pollard  finished third along with Jedidiah Uwagboe and Juan Ferreira in the under-17 doubles where Michael Spooner and Haresh Persaud copped gold. Bhagwandin and Joanathan Debidin finished second.

Debidin won the singles format ahead of Xavio Alexander who was second and Spooner and Uwagboe who both copped third.

In the under-19 singles, Debidin settled for second with Viraj Singh crowned champion. Jonathan Robinson and Raah Russell finished third. Singh and Xavio Alexander won the under-19 doubles while Debidin and Sharma ended second. Uwagoboe and Ferreira bowed out in the semi final along with Russell and Frank Waddell.

The association expressed gratitude to the National Sports Commission and Director of Sports, Steve Ninvalle, for making the tournament possible as well as Minister of Sports, Charles Ramson Jnr, who highlighted the government’s plan to have a home for badminton at the National Racquet Centre.

The association also stated that it is extremely grateful for this timely and long-awaited initiative.
