CANU intercepts two boats off No.47 Village with suspected cannabis

This morning, Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) officers with support from the GDF Coast Guard intercepted two vessels suspected of transporting cannabis along the coast of No 47 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

Despite the rough seas and inclement weather, the team boarded both vessels to conduct searches, during which they discovered one shotgun, a quantity of ammunition as well as suspected cannabis on one of the vessels, a statement from CANU said. Several bags containing suspected cannabis were discovered on the other vessel.

Adrian Hetmyer age 44, Daniel Persaud age 20, both from Sheet Anchor Berbice, as well as Suriname nationals; Suren Mohan age 41 and Imami Fizal age 48, were arrested and escorted to CANU headquarters with the suspected narcotics, shotgun, and ammunition. The suspected cannabis was tested and weighed at CANU Headquarters.

The first vessel intercepted was carrying the Guyanese nationals, Adrian Hetmyer and Daniel Persaud and 105.8 kgs of suspected cannabis was discovered.

On board the second vessel, which was carrying the two Surinamese nationals, 11.2 kg of cannabis was discovered, along with a shotgun and ammunition.

The total weight of the cannabis was 117 kgs or 257.9 lbs with a local street value of $14.3 million.
