Den Amstel will battle Uitvlugt in the final of the Region #3 Zone in the ‘One Guyana President’s Cup’ this evening at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora, following hard-fought semi-final victories on Monday evening.

Though the persistent rainfall which enveloped the venue did dampen the playing area, it did not inhibit the energy and efforts of the competing teams, as well as the small crowd which descended on the venue.

Den Amstel defeated Stewartville 2-0 in the feature contest of the evening following a conversion on either side of the halftime interval. The first goal resulted following an error from the goalkeeper which allowed Reuben Dainty to score in the fifth minute.

Tasked with crossing the ball from a corner-kick, Dainty would inexplicably score as his cross evaded everyone, and settled into the back of the net after being misjudged by the goalkeeper.

The score remained changed heading into the halftime interval. The score was then sealed in the 85th minute when Jeffrey Perreira made his presence felt, latching onto a pass before rifling his strike into the back of the net from inside the area.

In the other fixture, Uitvlugt bested Pouderoyen 5-4 on penalty kicks after full time ended 2-2. EJ Mars unfortunately was the proverbial villain for Pouderoyen as his effort from distance during the penalty shoot-out was denied by the goalkeeper.

Prior to the eventful end, Malcolm Dainty handed Uitvlugt the lead in the 22nd minute, which proved to be the only noteworthy moment of the first half. Latching onto a right sided cross ahead of his marker, Dainty dribbled another defender, before slamming his effort past the goalkeeper from inside the penalty box.

However, Pouderoyen would equalise in the final seconds of the contest when Dexroy Adams netted in the 90th+2 minute. Receiving a pass from Stephon Fraser, Adams would evade the challenges of two defenders and finish into the left corner past the advancing goalkeeper.

The losers will compete in the third place playoff. Meanwhile, in the Region #4 section, Plaisance/Liliendaal and Lodge/Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust secured berths to the quarterfinal section following playoff wins on Monday at the Buxton Community Centre ground.

Plaisance/Liliendaal overcame Kitty/Campbellville  1-0. Travis Garraway recorded the only conversion of the match, as he found the back of the net in the 75th minute while Lodge/Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust squeaked past Victoria/Ann’s Grove 3-2 on penalty kicks, after regulation time ended 2-2.

Prior to the eventual conclusion, Raphael Edwards and Curtez Kellman found the back of the net in the 10th and 14th minute respectively for the eventual winners. For the losers, Alden Lawrence and Kevon Barry were on target in the 16th and 38th minute apiece.

The zone will resume tomorrow at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda with the quarterfinals. At 18:00hrs, Mahaicony will oppose Buxton/Beterverwagting, while West Ruimveldt will lock horns with Grove/Diamond/Samatta Point from 20:30hrs.

On Friday at the same venue, St. Cuthbert’s Mission/Swan/Kuru-Kururu will tackle Plaisance/Liliendaal from 18:00hrs, with the feature contest pitting South Ruimveldt/Tucville against

Lodge/Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust at 20:30hrs.
