The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) will look to end the 2022 season on a high with two rapid tournaments.

Each tournament will be a one-day fixture with nine rounds of 10-minute action and a one-second increment after each move.

The junior tournament is booked for the last day of the year and open to players born after January 1, 2022 with cash prizes set for the top three finishers and best female player. The first place finisher will walk away $30,000 richer while second place will settle for $20,000. Third place and the best female player will each cart off  $10,000. Players desiring of entering the competition will have to pay $1000 registration fee.

Meanwhile, the Open format will take place on January 2, 2023 with the winner pocketing $50,000. The second place prize is $30,000 while the third place and best female player will win $20,000. This format attracts a registration fee of $2000.

All registration must be done online and be submitted by 18:00hrs on the day prior to each tournament with registration fees allowed to be paid through Mobile Money Guyana.

Each day, the action gets underway from 09.00 hours with players seated at School of the Nations 15 minutes prior.

The GCF noted that “all participants, accompanying adults and other spectators attending the events are advised to take necessary safety precautions as the Covid-19 pandemic is still a threat.”

The release continued, “If a player shows any signs of COVID-19 symptoms, such as a cough, cold, fever and constant sneezing, whether it is just before or during the tournament, they will not be allowed to play or continue playing in the tournament.”

The federation expressed optimism at hosting a vibrant tournament under the Youth Committee which is headed by Fide Master Anthony Drayton.
