Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred at about 18:20 hrs yesterday on the Rupert Craig Highway (northern carriageway) in the vicinity of MovieTowne.

The accident involved a minibus bearing Licence plate #BAD1832, owned and driven at the time by Shivraj Persaud, a 39-year-old businessman of Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown and pedestrian Kissoondai Sewratan (now deceased), a 69-year-old of La Bonne Intention (LBI) housing scheme, East Coast Demerara, a release from the police said.

It is alleged that the minibus driver was proceeding east along the northern drive lane of the Rupert Craig Highway in the vicinity of MovieTowne when the pedestrian ran across the road from south to north into the path of the vehicle. The right side front of the vehicle came into contact with the pedestrian causing her to fall onto the road surface where she suffered injuries about the body.

An ambulance was summoned to the accident scene where the pedestrian was pronounced dead by Dr Rickett of the Georgetown Public Hospital.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the minibus driver, which shows no trace of alcohol in his system.

The woman’s body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination. The driver is in custody assisting with the investigation.

Stabroek News visited the scene last night and was able to speak with two eyewitnesses who asked to remain unnamed.

The first, a man, mentioned that at about 6:20 pm he and a friend were having a chat on the seawall, opposite MovieTowne, when they heard an impact that sounded like someone being hit. They immediately looked up and saw the woman flying through the air and then fall at the side of the road.

“We ran to her rescue and a taxi driver who was nearby checked her pulse and felt that there was one, we could have seen that she breathe a little, however 15 to 20 minutes later, the paramedics arrived on the scene and checked her and pronounced her dead”, he said

He also related that he heard from the victim’s family members that  she was coming from paying a loan on a piece of land in the area. He also observed that the woman had suffered a puncture to the side of her head and a broken left leg.

The other eyewitness related much the same story.
