Motorcyclist dies in crash at Success

A motorcyclist died yesterday after crashing into the rear of a stationary lorry at Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Dead is Keon Marshall, 26, a porter of Lot 28 Republic Drive, Beterverwagting, ECD, who was riding motorcycle CK 6014. 

According to the police, the lorry, GAD 2985, is owned by NABI Construction Inc.

Its driver, Mark Bagot, a 42-year-old mechanic of Better Hope, ECD, told the police that he had exited the NABI Construction Inc compound on the northern side of Success Public Road, turning east into the southern lane, when the lorry encountered a mechanical problem and stalled. The driver said he put on the hazard lights and exited the vehicle intending to return to the compound to get another vehicle to pull his lorry into the corner, the police said.

He was at the rear of the lorry when he saw two motorcycles approaching at a fast rate of speed. The lorry driver told the police that the rider of CK 6014 drove straight into the lorry’s rear.

As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, fell onto the road sustaining injuries to his head and body. He was picked up in an unconscious condition by police and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr Durga.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Stabroek News, Marshall’s reputed wife Rushell Bostwick, 24, said, “We living together for ten years. We have three children together.

“He already went into work and at the time of the accident he was coming home back to eat from the shop, because when he was going to work the shop didn’t open. By the time I got on the scene he already die, so I ain’t know what exactly happen, and nobody who was there ain’t tell me nothing. The police who was there already pick him up and put him in the jeep.”

She noted that Marshall was the sole breadwinner of the family and she would need financial assistance to raise the children: 9-year-old Ezekiel, 6-year-old Kiara, and 3-month-old Kaden. The dead man’s mother, Hermina Marshall was only able to say: “It is hurting me. I can’t take what they did to my son. I can’t even stand up till now. I can’t take it.”

Marshall’s body is at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. The lorry driver is in custody, assisting with the investigation.
