Calvin Johnson freed of murder charge

Calvin Johnson, who along with another man, had been accused of the 2016 gunning down of Paul Rodney, had been cleared of the murder.

Johnson was discharged of the capital offence on Monday, after Justice Sandil Kissoon ruled that the prosecution had not proven all the elements to establish the charge against him.

In the circumstances, the jury was dircted by the judge to formally return a verdict of not guilty.

Johnson had been jointly charged with Joshua Meredith.

Back in March, however, Meredith pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter, accepting that he had unlawfully killed Rodney on November 21, 2016, at Avocado Square, East Ruimveldt.

He has been sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 30 years.

Rodney, 31, of Lot 530 West Ruimveldt, was gunned down, while returning from a dance in his community.

Meredith is also currently serving a 15-year sentence for the 2016 killing of Charlestown youth Gregory Garraway.

In December 2020, Meredith was charged with murdering Garraway in the course or furtherance of a robbery on October 2nd, 2016 at the Wings and Things Bar on Mandela Avenue.

The prosecution’s case was that Garraway had gone into the bar to place an order and was making his way to uplift it when Meredith snatched his two chains, whipped out a gun and fired a shot at him.

Garraway was hit in the abdomen and died just over a week later of septic shock.

Meredith had also pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter in this case.

Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry sentenced him to 15 years.
