Guyana men, women’s teams suffer defeat at Pan Am Qualifiers

Guyana’s men and women’s teams both suffered 3-0 defeats as the Pan American Squash championships continued in Cartagena, Colombia.

The men side fell easy prey to Argentina and Brazil in their two matches while the female team lost to Ecuador.

Jason Ray Khalil was beaten by Jeremias Azana 3-11, 3-11, -11, Alex Arjoon went down to Roberto Pezzato 1-11, 0-11, 6-11 and Samuel Ince-Carvalhal lost to Miguel Pujoi 3-11, 5-11.

Scores against Brazil, Khalil versus Diego Gobbi 1-11, 6-11, 4-11. Arjoon versus Guilherme Farnezi de Melo 5-11, 9-11, 5-11 and Ince-Carvalhal versus Rhuan Sousa      5-11, 5-11.

In the women’s match, Nicolette Fernandes lost in a grueling five-set encounter against Maria Paula Moya Lopez 11-5, 5-11, 11-5, 8-11 and 4-11 while Ashley Khalil went to four sets against Maria Caridad Buenano Araque 12-14, 11-7, 7-11 and 4-11. Taylor Fernandes was beaten 11-13, 5-11.

The Guyanese will be in action again tomorrow in the Round of 16 Doubles matches with Taylor Fernandes and Ashley Khalil teaming up to play Natalia Arancibia and Vanessa Rios of Bolivia in the Women’s Doubles.

Arjoon and Ince-Carvalhal will oppose Khamal Cumberbatch and Shawn Simpson of Barbados in the men’s doubles while Nicolette Fernandes and Jason Ray Khalil will clash with Barbadians Darien Benn and Amande Haywood in the mixed doubles.

The tournament will end Saturday with the doubles finals in all three categories.

The Pan American qualifiers are being run off to identify contenders for the Pan American Games billed for October 20- November 5 in Santiago, Chile.
