A twenty-eight-year-old taxi driver appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly to answer to the charge of theft.

It is alleged that on June 03, at D’Urban Street, Georgetown, Hosea Gray stole a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 valued $150,000, property of his passenger, Leinne Adolph.

The court heard that Gray and Adolph are known to each other. On the day in question at about 09.19 hours,  Adolph went to Unique Taxi Service, where she requested a taxi and Gray was selected as the driver to render the service. According to Adolph she entered the taxi with her cellphone in her hand and proceeded to Coldingen, East Coast Demerara. Upon reaching her destination, she exited the taxi and proceeded to her yard, but as she approached the gate she realised she did not have her keys with her.

As such, she reached into her bag for her cellphone to call her sister to have her open the gate and it was then she realised that it had been left in the taxi. Adolph immediately called Gray using her sister’s phone but got no answer. She later contacted him and he claimed he did not see any cellphone when he checked.

However, the police are in possession of video footage showing Adolph entering the taxi with a phone in her hand and exiting the vehicle without any phone. Gray was subsequently contacted by the police but refused to report to the East La Penitence Police Station as directed.

The police prosecutor did not object to bail which was granted in the sum of $75,000.

The matter has been adjourned to July 7.
