Guyanese darts players Sudesh Fitzgerald and Norman Madhoo suffered early elimination at the World Cup of Darts which ends today in Frankfurt, Germany.

Madhoo, a three-time World Championship qualifier and Fitzgerald, a World championship participant in 2009 were beaten by defending champions Australia and Gibraltar in group ‘C’ of the first round.

They went down to the young duo of Gibraltar 1-4 and then succumbed to the Australian pair of Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock 0-4.

There were high hopes for the Guyanese pair ahead of the World Cup of Darts following their successful participation at the nine-nation Latin American and Caribbean championships organized by the CDLC and Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) in Costa Rica.

They were the regional qualifiers for the World Championships which started last Friday and conclude today.

The World Championships hosted by the PDC have at stake over 350,000 pounds sterling in prize money up for grabs and have attracted darts players from around the globe with over 36 countries participating.

Defending champions Australia, Belgium, Philippines, Sweden, Latvia, South Africa, Croatia, Canada, hosts Germany and the United States of America were among the early winners.

There were 12 groups in the preliminary competition. (Troy Peters)
