Amsterdam, Cummings to serve as Guyana’s flag bearers at CAC Games opening today

Reigning Sportsman-of-the-Year, boxer Desmond Amsterdam and standout table tennis player, Natalie Cummings will be Guyana’s flag bearers when the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games opens today at the Estadio Jorge ‘El Mágico’ González in San Salvador.

While the 24th edition of the Games will be inaugurated today, competition is already underway following the start of table tennis and beach volleyball on Wednesday. The preliminary rounds of boxing also started yesterday.

Scheduled to close on July 8, San Salvador will host 31 of the 37 sports of the regional Games while the Dominican Republic will stage the other six – field hockey, canoeing, equestrian, modern pentathlon, shooting and taekwondo.

Athletes competing will be eyeing qualification for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

Prior to departure, Amsterdam said he was ready to carry the Golden Arrowhead and climb the top podium step for the gold medal.

Notes: Team Guyana’s 52-athlete contingent will represent the nation in 10 disciplines at CAC. They are Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Fencing, Hockey, Swimming, Table Tennis and Weightlifting. Hockey will be the only discipline that will compete in the Dominican Republic.
